Hey! This is my first blog ever and I hope you all enjoy! My first post will be about something super POPULAR and a show that has become one of my favorites.

Why would I want to talk about zombies?
It's become one of the things everyone talks about...and that almost EVERY show is about.
I know old spanish people who don't even understand English who watch it and grasp what they can!
When that happens, you can guess it's the "ish" right now.
Now what specifically would I like to talk about?
One of the characters that everyone rags on, the youngest badass ever, Carl.

| Zombies? I kill that! |
His growth from the first episode has really zoomed by during all the episodes.
But why did everyone hate him at first?
I got to certain episodes and finally understood.
It finally hit me.
He was an idiot.

| I'm gonna poke you because you're stuck in the hardest thing ever. Mud. |
This really nailed it for me. I could deal with all the "disobeying his parents" thing because, geesh, he's a kid in a post-apocalyptic world. He obviously knows what to do more than his cop dad and cheating mom.
When I say it like that, it doesn't convey the sarcasm I meant it to...
Anyways, yes, he was quite the dummy throughout season 1 and 2.
But then, here is season 3 and....
There's an eight month time jump between season 2 and 3 and you can tell Carl has seen some pretty crazy stuff!
Now he's all like, "Mom, here's some medical supplies, I killed some walkers to get them."
NO FREAKING BIGGIE!
Ok, maybe he didn't say it like that...
But he should've.
He's grown so much. You can tell in the way he's learned how to clear houses from walkers in a safe manner.
Not walking up to a zombie and trying some poking just for the LOL's.
He's becoming more and more like Rick, the dad he looks up to.
Trying to protect everyone as best he can and though he's still quite the reckless little bastard,
he does it for the right reason.
I look forward to seeing how he grows up.
According to my cousin, he barely ages in the comic so this kid is probably gonna look way older than his comic counterpart in like two years.
And I hope the show still goes on so I can see how much more of a badass he becomes.
:D
What does everyone think about this show? Anyone have a favorite character?

Well; this leaves me with three questions, I think. First, who is this "everyone" that rags on Carl? Is there any evidence that audiences as a whole have responded to him more negatively than other characters?
ReplyDeleteSecond, we tend--I think--to expect children to be a little less savvy than adults. Why should we find Carl's childhood any less endearing than any other? Why is it that one might thing that Carl comes off as an "idiot," rather than simply seeming like a child? And, to the extent that he does seem like a child, why would audiences of TWD respond more negatively to children than other audiences?
Third, what is the significance of any of this? Is this simply chit-chat about a favorite show, or is there something significant about the way Carl is portrayed? Can we learn something about culture, about television, or even about ourselves? Or does this simply come down to one set of writers making one set of decisions about one character?
In response to your questions, I use the term "everyone" very loosely. I have read other blogs explaining their hatred and annoyance with Carl as a character. I also have many friends that watch this show and in the beginning of TWD, many of them felt the same way towards Carl. I am sure that there are other audiences whom just see the innocence and ignorance of a child. However, we as TWD viewers, see Carl as an idiot because we expect him to grow more rapidly being that he is a child in an apocalyptic world. It's the way viewers see things since they are on the other side. Have u ever watched a movie or a show and sat there watching a character do something stupid and you say "What an idiot. Go that way!! Not that way." It's because us viewers are on the opposite side criticizing only because we have everything in front of our eyes.
ReplyDeleteThe significance of this post is pretty much chit-chat adding on to the many negative opinions on Carl. However, it also shows Carl's transitioning and how opinions are changing due to him acting as an adult rather than just a vulnerable child in this crazy world he is living in. I believe that his transitions shows something significant. It shows how people in different societies have to adjust. Furthermore, it shows that children's innocence and childhood are easily taken away when HAVING to grow up or having to play a certain role when wanting to be like someone they look up to. It shows how children can be put under significant pressure. Sadly, this is really how it is in our society today. Children are pressured to be like their parents or like other people such as doctors, lawyers, The President (lol).
To be honest I dont think you have the right idea when it comes to Carl, hes been smart enough to stay alive even with all the "idiotic" decisions hes chosen over others. I do see him becoming more of the man they need him to be though, responsible, brave, and trustworthiness in my opinion are important trates especially when dealing with a zombie epidemic. My favorite character is a toss up between the Asian and the Red neck (pardon the reference). Both have changed a lot, both have grown to be elegible to be worthy right hand men when it comes to facing any obstacle. Nonetheless The Walking Dead is an amazing show, suspenseful and exciting. Definitely top 5 on best/favorite shows ever.
