Hey everyone! So I know you all know that the new "cool thing" to do is SnapChat. And...if you haven't downloaded the app yet...either you don't have an Iphone/some other smartphone or...you're just out of the loop! (It's okay, my best friend Amy put me on SnapChat LAST WEEK, haha.)
It's like every day a new form of media is being created; as if Instagram wasn't enough. BUT- SnapChat is so much fun!
For those of you that do not know what SnapChat is, it's an app where you can send any picture you want and it will disappear after a time limit in which you set...without the possibility of it being screenshotted.
However, this app has raised a concern: Is it sexting or just pure fun?
In today's society, it is so much easier for one to put themselves in a situation that the next day you're like "Oh no! What the heck did I do?"
Especially as college students, we all know a friend or two who have put themselves in the situation of sexting, whether it be on the internet or a simple text. It's become such a huge issue; No one is safe! I mean, Kim Kardashian wasn't and neither was Paris Hilton. At the end of the day, if you sext with the wrong person or if IT gets to the hands of the wrong person-you're doomed!
However, the makers of this app created SnapChat in a way that people can still sext except your picture is only seen for a couple of seconds AND if your picture IS screenshotted, you're notified.
However, IS THIS OKAY? OR DOES IT JUST PROMOTE SEXTING EVEN MORE?
I mean, hey if that's your thing then go right ahead.
What do my friends and I use it for?
Getting by a boring class. I'm alone on the Starbucks line. I'm trying to ignore someone.
Simply, plain fun.
Making funny faces. Snapshotting something random. Yep, those are basically my snapshots to my friends.
Anyway, however you decide to use this app, STAY SAFE!
DOES ANYONE THINK SNAPCHAT IS JUST ADDING TO THE ISSUES OF SEXTING? HOW DO YOU USE IT?

SnapChat is surprisingly fun. Downloaded it against my own will but its slowly become an everyday app. Sometimes words just cant describe a certain situation you're in or something you see and that's where SnapChat comes in to play.
ReplyDeleteAs for the whole "sexting" issue, people will "sext" regardless. If someone's dumb enough to send their business viral than they deserve to have their ass all over the internet. SnapChat will be used as additional every day comedy for some and unfortunately used as a smartphone condom by others. But as we all know condoms are only guaranteed to work 99.9% of the time, so some of those "sexts" are bound to find their way to the public....
Mark, I totally agree that SnapChat has become an everyday app. With Instagram, if you post a picture EVERY.SINGLE.DAY or like before you go to bed "goodnight," you instantly become "one of those" annoying instagrammers and I will instantly unfollow you. However with SnapChat, it allows you to snapshot away about anything with just certain people. With that said, I also agree with the fact that sometimes a picture can define a funny or an awkward situation rather than telling the story. The expression "you had to be there," does not even need to be said because with just a snapshot, it's kinda like the person was actually there.
DeleteSnapChat will definitely be used to sext by many people...I mean that's what it apparently was created for. In my opinion, SnapChat was targeted for young people in our society today. I mean think about it, almost every teenager has a smartphone now. This app may start to become an issue just like "bullying" has become a major issue in our society today.
To directly answer the questioned you posed, it probably improves the sexting issue in the fact that your picture isn't going to end up on the internet. I honestly believe that the app was created purely to sext relatively safely. If you have an iphone you clearly have the capability to send a picture to another person just via imessage or texting, without the use of an app, and if you do use the app for genuine reasons (usually to make a stupid face and send it to your friend so they laugh) then you probably don't care if they have that in their inbox. I get that it's the next fun thing but people are kidding themselves if they think the app isn't just designed so people could send naked texts comfortably. But then again I have a flip phone so what do I know?
ReplyDeleteBeing the one that introduced you to SnapChat, I am obsessed with it! I actually think I have a problem. I will SnapChat people that are sitting right next to me. When I first got SnapChat I wasn't aware that SnapChat was created for the purpose of sexting. My friend told me to get it and at first I hesitated, thinking I didn't need something else to distract me. I mean, don't get me wrong, it IS distracting but it's entertaining and it gets me through my day sometimes. I could be having the worst day ever and my friend will send me a SnapChat with a really funny face and it'll turn my whole day around. It kind of makes me wonder how many people "sext" if they had to make an app that targets sexters. I think that you shouldn't be sending nudy's anyways, even if they're only seen for a couple of seconds but that's just me. It was smart to create a notification that alerts people when someone screenshots their photo but what is that going to do? If the person sent the picture to his/her friends and they sent it to their friends then the damage is already done. My advice? Keep your clothes on. I guess sexters are going to have to find a new app because ugly people have taken over.
